Okay, so I realize that we're not quite up to your high standards yet, but I'd love a professional opinion of our work, if there are any animators lurking about...

Re: Hey Pixar... ;-)
Sat, February 14, 2004 - 2:09 AMI'm finishing up my degree, so not a pro necessarily, but just watched two of the films on your site and thought I might give some feed back.
The teaser didn't have much character animation and seemed to have quite a bit of the whole mech/flying space ship thing that's been done over and over. However, I really liked the Egon and Dunci short, thought it was put together really well. The settings were done beautifully, as was the character design on the guy. Cat was pretty decent. Nice story line that gets some laughs. Did you do this in Maya? Also, what'd you use to do the textures? Character animation is coming along, but moves a bit slow in places.
All in all a very nice piece of work, how many people worked on putting that together, all together?
Keep up the good work. -

Sat, February 14, 2004 - 11:11 AMHey Jesse, thanks for the feedback!
Actually, this was done primarily by 2 guys using 3D Studio Max (we haven't had the money to purchase Maya just yet). Textures are a combination of generated (custom Windows-based tool), hand-pixeled and Photoshopped images. -

Re: Hey Pixar... ;-)
Sat, February 14, 2004 - 8:42 PMOh wow, that's impressive. Did it take very long to put together? I'm working on something kind of similar of my own right now. Starting to skin the models and such. Dunno if I'll be able to animate out much of it by the time I graduate at the end of this semester, but I should at least have the setting and characters all set up and rigged, along with a few shots of animation or so. Also worked on the story from a traditional hand drawn approach last semester. It's all on Maya, at school, but I run 3DS Max at home still, haven't used it much lately though.
Anyways, good work again.

Naah, Jesse . . . its not like that. That is based on "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang. If anything, Metropolis influenced generations of Sci Fi films. By doing a Metropolis piece these boys have gone back to the source. I thought it was a beautiful CG tribute to the Lang film. Even had a post effect to give the old time silent film flicker to the animation. Great work!
Wendell, have you seen "Things to Come" by HG Wells? Or ever looked at the work of George Melies?
