New software sucks because none of it is new! It's old software that they want you to buy again so you can be up-to-date.

New software sucks because you have to install it. When I have my machine running fine, I don't want another hassle of upgrading or putting something new in to my machine. Or another licensing service running in the background draining my CPU.

New software sucks because you have to learn it. I just got used to the old way and now some design-hound in the basement has decided to change the way my properties are displayed or how my tool window works.

New software sucks be cause everyone else already knows it better than you and now you look stupid because you're not up to date. Oh, my are the grey hairs showing. That yonger person over there, already learned the software and still has time to step out of the office for a carmel latte (don't they have deadlines...?)

Until new software works all by itself, it will always suck!

Unfortunately the industry is very competitive what happens is someone comes up with a good idea. Then they are contacted by a big player. The big boy says, “give me your candy, or you’ll be sorry” You have two choices, one get your ass kicked, and still loose your candy, or two just give it up.

In other words: the bigger company gives an offer, and explains to you how they will run you out of business if you do not sell.

This is what happens to most. I have been trying to find out what happened to Improv Technologies for a while. The company just vanished. However I have experience in the computer industry, and the signs are ever so present. All those involved in the project have not, or can not say a word as to what happened. Soon after the project vanished Alias came up with a shipping of a new tool like Orhestrate 3D called Motion Builder. Ironically the info came from a tribe member about motion builder. I had it, but thought it was a useless plug in. It is incompatible with 3D Studio Max (I have tried).

Though the software might now be ‘uncool’ expect changes in Maya that will blow your mind. There is a shift going towards motion capture that will eliminate keyframing in some instances, and make keyframing much more efficient in others.

      interesting. Thanks for your thoughts

Would you guys agree that we would be better off if software was not created for profit? All the large companies have turning a profit as their primary goal. If profit was eliminated, and their primary goal was to write good software, I we'd all be alot better off.

The reality of this would mean re-engineering the economy so that profit, growth, & the flow of money were no longer signs of a healthy company

What a silly, meaningless question. When you know how to use a software tool of anykind it ceases to be "new" and if it is indeed useful it doesn't "suck," although there are always problems even in the best applicartions.

I don't know why I bother to reply to something like this. I don't know what it has to do with Pixar - whose software very clearly does not "suck" - unless maybe Renderman sucks too much money out of your pocket:).
