Party on Dark Faery Tale Film Set Tonight -- Free Wine+Cheese Just Blocks from Pixar

You're invited to a small set party to raise funds for Paper Angels, the dark faery tale film short now in production at Xian Space in West Berkeley. We've built a vast, evocative set and loaded in an impressive collection of lights, camera equipment and even a fog machine, and we'd love to share our work with you! Come see what a small group of like minded individuals can accomplish with a budget of peanuts and a lot of hard work.

PAPER ANGELS SET PARTY FUNDRAISER
Tuesday, September 26, 2006
7:00pm--10:00pm

Xian Space
1037 Murray St. between San Pablo and 9th St., Berkeley (directions below)

Wine, grapes and other snacks will be served. The director, cast and crew of Paper Angels are looking forward to meeting you!

Want to know more about our film? The attached executive summary includes some photos we like and a description of our plans for the short. Please forward it to any friends or loved ones who may be interested in supporting our project, and feel free to invite others along tomorrow night, as well. Thanks for supporting community-based collaborative art!

More info about our film project? See http://paperangels2006.tribe.net for set photos and more.

Questions to Jesse at 415-794-4393.

DIRECTIONS TO XIAN SPACE:

By car from SF: After the Bay Bridge, get on 80 north (center / left lanes), which turns north and runs past the Emeryville Ikea. Get off at the Ashby Ave. exit and go straight from the offramp onto Ashby Ave. Take a right at San Pablo Ave. and then an immediate right onto Murray St. Xian is 1037 Murray St.

By BART: The closest BART stop is the Ashby station. If you have a bike, you can easily bike down Ashby to the east from the station. You’ll turn right after the BART exit gates, head across the parking lot to the road, take a right and then the next left onto Ashby. Take a left on San Pablo and an immediate right onto Murray St -- we are at 1037 Murray St. This is about a 20-25 minute walk, so feel free to call Jesse for a pickup from the BART station if that would help.

Piaxar at MoMA NYC!!!

Pixar: 20 Years of Animation
December 14, 2005–February 6, 2006

Film and Media Gallery, Titus 1 Lobby Gallery, Titus 2 Lobby Gallery, and throughout the first floor

In keeping with the Museum’s long tradition of presenting animation, this is the most extensive gallery exhibition that MoMA has ever devoted to the genre. Featuring over 500 works of original art on loan for the first time from Pixar Animation Studios, the show includes paintings, concept art, sculptures, and an array of digital installations. These works reveal the intricate, hands-on processes behind Pixar’s computer-generated films—including Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, and numerous shorts. The exhibition also includes a complete retrospective of Pixar films. Demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between traditional and digital media pioneered by the studio over its twenty-year history, Pixar: 20 Years of Animation is a tribute to the artists whose work has reinvented the genre.

The Yoshiko and Akio Morita Gallery features the world premiere of two media pieces that embody the intersection of art and science that distinguishes computer animation. Artscape, a widescreen projection created by artist/director Andrew Jimenez and sound designer Gary Rydstrom, invites viewers to experience, in the context of a digital installation, much of the handcrafted art shown elsewhere in the exhibition. Zoetrope is a dynamic installation, modeled on pre-cinema technology, which rotates character sculptures under a strobe light to simulate continuous motion.

Hey everyone!

I just recently finished my character animation demo reel for 2005. I unfortunately did not get a chance to go to Siggraph this year so I would apreciate any critiques and criticism you could give me.

I posted a link to it online at: http://kristoffj.100free.com

Take a gander and let me know what you think.

Pixar Stock

When I first learned that Pixar was not renewing their dstribution contract with Disney, I saw this as a good thing, leaving Pixar in the driver's seat to set up a far more favorable deal with another distributor in the future. I bought some stock in Pixar on that news. And I'm glad I did! It's through the roof.

Question: Does anyone here have any inside knowledge about how the company is run? I love Steve Jobs' vision and leadership. But I'm wondering how the work environment is. Are employees happy at Pixar, for the most part.

And does Pixar offer employees stock options as an incentive?

I'm just looking for more info to better judge whether to hold or sell. Right now, I'm holding!

Best regards,

Twan

P.S. Anyone here who is currently working for Pixar, or who has in the past, I just want to personally thank you for doing your part in making all of Pixar's films so damn enjoyable. Loved them all, and in particular, The Incredibles. Fun and awesome!

What happened to the project Ken Perlin was working on. I heard about it at Siggraph 2000 in New Orleans, then it just vanished. They had a site
(www.improv-tech.com/), but it is down. What is up. Ken has the patent why is the product so hard to get?

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Orhestrate 3D?

I've tried the hr@pixar.com address and only got a dumb automated reply to my inquiries. Is there any way to actually have some kind of an interaction with a real person here? I'm trying to get them some material for a character rigging/modelling/texturing position and wanted to talk to someone about what they would like to see. I realized that they're not currently hiring for these positions, but it would be nice to be able to talk to someone about if they will be likely to have any opennings in the forthcoming future.

Should this group be public, moderated or private? I'm open to any... I originally created it as a public forum for people to be able to all discuss Pixar and things related to Pixar, but Gabe had a legit concern that people could use it to track down Pixar employees... does Tribes adequately protect email addresses of its users? Are these Tribe identities being related to Pixar individuals something that we want to keep hidden from the general public? I'm happy to go private, but I want to get input from others. I would say that I would prefer to keep it public so-as to increase the traffic and get more public discussions here, but if people feel that their privacy is at risk then I have absolutely no problem making it private, which I've currently done until this topic is resolved.

Mentor...?

Greetings - I'm a graphic designer / screenwriter / filmmaker / flash animator. I've just moved from LA to Boston, (as strange as that sounds, it's actually put me in a place where I can focus on what I need to do) and I am looking to make the move from 2D to 3D. I have just purchased Lightwave and Digital Fusion (Newtek is currently back-ordered so I'm still waiting...) and I'm in the process of building a new machine to support it.

Fortunately I don't have to work, so I will be devoting myself to this FULL TIME. It would be wonderful to have a live resource - a person I could talk to from time to time, who could mentor me via email as I go through the learning curve and develop my skills.

Hope you're out there. Thanks!

Pixar Quits Disney Talks
Thu January 29, 2004 05:21 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pixar Animation Studios Inc.(PIXR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday it ended talks with Walt Disney Co.(DIS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) to renew a lucrative movie distribution deal that has resulted in such blockbusters as "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo."

Pixar, the computer animation pioneer founded by Apple Computer Inc.'s (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Steve Jobs, said it would look for another studio partner to distribute its films starting in 2006, when its current deal with Disney expires.

The move was an unexpected blow to Disney, which reaped a financial bonanza and critical acclaim from the partnership and has struggled with its own strategy for animation.

Disney shares dropped 4 percent in after-hours trade.

The five movies that Pixar and Disney have released since 1995 have earned more than $2.5 billion at the global box office and accounted for a large share of Disney Studios' operating profit in recent years.

"After 10 months of trying to strike a deal with Disney, we're moving on," said Jobs, Pixar's chief executive.

"We've had a great run together -- one of the most successful in Hollywood history -- and it's a shame that Disney won't be participating in Pixar's future successes."

Pixar had complained that the terms of the distribution deal were tilted too heavily in Disney's favor. Under the deal, Pixar was responsible for content, while Disney handled distribution and marketing.

In exchange, Pixar has split profits with Disney and pays the studio a distribution fee of between 10 percent to 15 percent of revenue.

Based on its blockbuster success, Pixar has argued that it should keep the profit itself and cut the fees its studio partner charges.

Many observers had expected Pixar and Disney, headed by Chief Executive Michael Eisner, to keep talking at least until the middle of this year and to eventually reach a deal since both had gained so much from their partnership.

"It makes it look like Eisner did something wrong again, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions. This could be a negotiating tactic by Pixar as well," said Patrick McKeigue, an analyst at Independence Investment, which holds Disney shares.

Disney was not immediately available for comment. Its stock fell quickly in after hours trade to $23.54 from $24.45 at the close on the New York Stock Exchange.

The existing deal between Disney and Pixar includes two more films in production, "The Incredibles," set for release in November and "Cars," due out in 2005.

Disney will retain the rights to produce sequels to films such as "Toy Story," Pixar said in a statement.

Hey folks-- I don't know what the protocol is around here regarding talking about industry-related productions, so if this post is a faux pas smack me and we'll move on. ;)

That being said-- word is being bandied about that Pixar is doing a 2D feature unit with Brad Bird's Ray Gunn as the first project.

Thoughts?

I'll start by saying, I'm new to this tribe and the whole tribe.net thing, so if I come off a little dopey please forgive me. I dig Pixar, so I figured this would be a good place to talk about what I like about Pixar flicks.
I have a little girl, so I was watching Monsters Inc. for about the tenth time, and I noticed something I hadn't caught before: Boo hands 'Kitty' a Nemo, (or maybe Marlin), doll toward the end of the movie when they're in her bedroom. She hands him a Woody doll too, but since Toy Story had already been released when Monsters Inc. came out, it didn't surprise me. This is probably old news, but I thought it was a pretty cool little foreshadow thrown in there. Does anyone know if Pixar does this a lot? If so, what are some of the other little "Waldos" I should look for?

Hiya! My husband and I just recently joined. While neither of us worked for Pixar, we are animation enthusiasts and enjoy all of Pixar's work.

Depending on how you end up going with the group, I would look forward to being a part of the community if possible.
